Rich, Denny, Andrew and Jason met in 2023 at the Tasman Bay Blues Club where they performed with other musicians at the Club’s monthly Blues Jam Nights. Discovering a creative synergy they formed a band playing Chicago-style Blues, as well as writing their own, original music.
Over the next two years Rich and the Poor Boys built a solid fan base, performing regularly at Fairfield House, The Boathouse, The Wakefield Hotel, International Blues Music Day, at Festivals and at private functions. The highlight on their gigs calendar for 2024 and 2025 was performing at Tasman Bay Blues Club’s prestigious Blues on the Point Festival alongside ‘the best of the best’ national and local blues musicians.
In late 2025 Denny retired to live life ‘on the high seas’, and Alister Gunn stepped in to replace him on bass.
Rich played in a number of UK Blues bands before arriving in NZ. A founding member of Blues band Jukejoint – with whom he still plays – Rich was keen to form a smaller, harmonica-led band playing in the Chicago-blues style of Little Walter, Howlin’ Wolf and Junior Wells.
The Poor Boys are all dedicated Blues musicians who have been playing around the Nelson/Tasman region in various bands for many years.
